Between the sun and the showers last Saturday (7/7/12), Grafham played a game of cricket, the first since the 2nd June. The game on Saturday was played at Bedford Park against Premier Solicitors Indian, reduced to 32 overs per innings from the normal 40 overs in an attempt to complete a game before the weather turned from light showers to the persistent rainfall forecasted. Grafham won the toss and elected to bat.
The playing surface of the square was soft and was expected to cut up, hopefully giving the second team to bat a surface of unpredictable bounce; but from the off, the pitch behaved capriciously with balls keeping low and occasionally bouncing head high. Jack Sene (31) and Gareth Knowles (10) were the only Grafham batsman who seemed anywhere near comfortable with the playing conditions; although several of the Grafham batsmen were out to freak deviations of the ball before their inning could develop. Grafham made 83 all out with S Banagee being the pick of the Premier Solicitors Indian bowlers 6.3 overs:2 maidens: 14 runs for 5 wickets.
By now the sun had come out; seemingly permanently and the afternoon was doing a good impression of being a normal pleasant midsummer’s day. The pitch, although well scarred and divotted, presented no terrors for the Premier Solicitor batters, who once they had taken the measure of the Grafham bowlers, with large heaves mixed with sensible shots, overtook the Grafham total after nearly 18 overs.
Tom Chester: the captain was Grafham’s best bowler with 23 runs for 1 wkt off 7 overs. Grafham lost the game by 8 wkts. The sun by this time was once again behind its normal curtain of Nimbo Cumulus cloud.
